Last week we discussed some attributes of leaders and managers. This week I have some additional thoughts about this important subject.
Continuing with the analysis from before:
At their best:
Effective leaders take calculated risks commensurate based upon the anticipated rewards.
Effective managers are risk adverse.
Effective leaders connect the work and the efforts of all to the achievement of the vision.
Effective managers enforce the agreements and contracts for work.
Bill Peery of the Sovereign Institute says contrary to popular belief, he doesn’t believe one can learn to be a great leader. One can learn processes and leadership techniques which can be valuable, but the best leaders of today were leaders when they started in first grade. And the best managers were pretty effective at managing their environment when they were children.
Nature trumps nurture in determining whether you a leader or manager.
