Art is the creative process of taking your skills and abilities and mixing that with a little bit of inspiration to create something new. It can be physical or artistic ability. From watching an elite athlete to a more traditional art like painting, there’s something beautiful about elegantly performing a job well. You can achieve art once you’ve mastered a craft. With mastery, you then have the ability to add flair and a sense of play in what you’re doing. It’s like watching a basketball player; first they learn how to dribble, then they get to where they can go behind the back, through the legs, or throw a no-look pass. They’re finding the fun after mastering the craft. I like finding the fun!

There is kind of a combination of art and science. They’re both a process. One is more open-ended and the other is more structured. For example, on the art side, you may say, “Let’s come up with a new process to do this.” You might have three ideas, you set up experiments and you try it multiple ways, giving each idea initial conditions that may be the same or may be different. You run those controlled experiments and see which method works best. Some may fail, and some may succeed. That’s where science comes in. I liken it to putting chemicals in a bowl to see what blows up and what doesn’t. Then you learn from that.
