3 Considerations to Work in Middle Market

by | Feb 23, 2023 | Recruiting, Insight-Post

Have you thought about the middle market? Everything has its pros and cons, and as you contemplate your career path, you’re considering your options of the best environment to work. PKF Texas Talent Acquisition Specialist, Emily Marsh, shares insight on why you should think about working in the middle market.

Jen: PKF Texas is where you go to grow personally and professionally. We are dedicated to appreciating your career while making you feel appreciated all along the way. I’m Jen Lemanski and I’m here with Emily Marsh, our Talent Acquisition Specialist here at PKF Texas. Emily, welcome back. Glad we’ve got you to talk about more recruiting topics.

Emily: Absolutely. Thanks for having me.

Jen: People considering a job change or entering into, you know, their career, they’ve got a lot of different options when they’re looking at accounting firms. You can get the really, really big guys. You can get the 1, 2, 2 person shops, but we’re right here kind of in the middle.

We’re in the middle market. We service clients anywhere from 20 to 500 million in revenue. So that’s a very different working environment than if you were to go to one of those larger firms or one of the smaller firms. So why would somebody choose the middle market to work for?

Work Hours and Flexibility

Emily: Most of the reasons why people choose the middle market is going to be our flexibility and our hours. You have all heard busy season horror stories of working 80-plus hours a week for multiple weeks on end. Obviously, you’re going to have to work more hours than normal, but it ebbs and flows. When it’s busy, it’s busy, and then when you’re out of busy season it kind of slows down a little bit. You can take a breath – less burnout for sure.

You Know Your Team

We also are able to get to know the people that you work with. We’re not 5,000-plus individuals that you’re never going to meet. You’re going to see everyone either in the office or at the different events that we have and get to know those people, especially even the directors. They’re not people who are standoffish or, “Oh no, don’t go see those people.” They’re approachable and very friendly. So, you get to know everybody and kind of have that more personal connection than you do somewhere maybe larger.

Variety of Work and Skills

You are also able to kind of have a little bit more responsibility earlier on in your career and get to know your clients more, have that more face-to-face interaction, as well as have a variety of different clients and different industries that you’re able to work on. So, there’s a lot of different reasons to come to middle market, that I think are all positive.

Jen: Definitely something, especially the students should be considering, what type in environment do they want to work in? You know, what does that look like? What do they want their career to be?

Emily: Exactly.

Jen: So, it sounds like middle market should be an option that they should consider.

Emily: Absolutely.

Jen: Perfect. Well, we’ll get you back to talk a little bit more about some other recruiting topics. Sound good?

Emily: Sounds great. Okay.
