A Day in the Life of a PKF Texas Audit Intern

by | Aug 3, 2023 | Recruiting, Insight-Post

What does an internship at PKF Texas look like? And what kinds of things can you expect? Audit Experienced Associate Eduardo sat down with us to share his experience and how the firm enjoys Appreciating You.

Hi, my name is Eduardo, and I am in the audit department. I have been here for basically two years.

Describe your internship experience.

So, my internship experience was really nice. I got to see a variety of different industries I worked on, anything from golf country clubs to oil and gas to hospitality. So, it was nice just getting a big variety of clients to work on and not just being stuck on the same job.

Throughout my entire internship experience, I was able to extend into the summer. We had some availability, which was really nice, and I got to then experience working all 401(k) plans, which was a completely different shift from, you know, entire audits. I made some really good friends. I joined a PKF indoor soccer team. We met every Tuesday, so that was nice. I got to meet people from different departments and just kind of grow my connections inside of PKF.

What was your greatest challenge?

So, my greatest challenge was basically just learning the job structure and how audits should be done by accounting standards and providing our clients a good audit experience.

Describe a day in the life of an intern.

So, a day in the life of an intern, you log in, check in with your senior, go over any open notes that they may have left, just kind of go over work papers in general. Making sure that you’ve hit all of your key points, that you’re learning what you’re doing and not just kind of going through it, going over any mistakes, which is great. Make all the mistakes because we’re, you know, we’re learning as interns and our senior team is just really great at helping us achieve a better internship experience.

Describe PKF Texas in one word.

PKF Texas in one word to me is inclusive. Everyone is just super friendly. No matter what department you end up working with, you’re going to meet others in our other two departments, even our admin team, Human Capital. And everyone’s just so friendly. They’re here to help you grow, and it’s just a fun, inclusive firm.

How would you describe the culture at PKF Texas?

The culture at PKF Texas… Everyone’s willing to help you grow and become a better person. Our saying is that we’re Approachable Advisors™, and we’re definitely, as a team, just working together to become better people, whether it’s inside the firm or in any endeavors that you go into afterwards. There’s great work flexibility. We have compressed work scheduled during the summer. They care about you achieving your CPA status, so they, you know, make sure to give you a good CPA study package, help you with all your materials, so they give you a nice incentive to achieve that.

What was your favorite thing about your internship at PKF Texas?

My favorite thing about my internship experience is definitely the people that I worked with. They’re still very close to me. There are some people from my own internship group that are coming back later this year, and we still keep in touch, we hang out, you know, outside of work. But just all the connections that I’ve made made me feel like I wasn’t just a number, but I was actually someone at the firm.

What was your favorite PKF Texas perk?

My favorite perk at PKF has definitely been the remote work environment, whether that’s working from home or having to come into the office and work as a team. As an audit member, we do travel out to clients, which is really nice, because sometimes we get to go to different states and work together with our teams or different cities. But just having that flexibility to work at home, we also do get a package to furnish your home with computers, monitors, things of that nature. So that’s been really nice.

What makes PKF Texas unique?

So, what I think makes us very unique is, is even though there’s a tiered structure to our organization from directors all the way down to interns, Human Capital, admin, we are all one firm. And no matter what you’re going through or if you need some help, you’re more than welcome to talk to whoever you want at any position and they’ll make you feel welcomed. So it’s just very, very nice.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to future interns?

My one piece of advice is: ask all the questions. We’ve all been interns. We’ve all been there before. You’re expected to not know as much of the job that you’re currently working on, but if you ask the questions, we’ll make sure to help you out.

What would you say to an intern considering an internship with PKF Texas?

The only thing that I would say if you’re considering an internship here at PKF Texas is we can’t wait to welcome you to our firm and help you grow into an Approachable Advisor™ at PKF Texas.
